Dear Students,

welcome to the elective course Environmental Research Project (EMRP)! This is a practical DIY like course.

The main topics this year are imaging and data analysis using the drones of my team as well as wireless sensor networks based on IoT technologies. You have to build a system and/or a processing chain. We will define the details together in class.

This course is a combination of lectures / labs in presence (streamed and recorded) including discussion and practical work / exercises as well as self learning phases and project work. 

The final assignment will be a working demonstrator including project documentation on a git server as well as a project presentation. 

I will also ask you to reflect on your own contribution and to give your own self-assessment.

The requirements are as always: Profound knowledge and skills, well-written and comprehensive project documentation as well as a working environmental monitoring system.

You will learn about environmental systems and physical principles of measuring devices.
You will learn about microcontrollers, embedded systems and sensors to build your own environmental monitoring systems.
You will use IoT (Internet of Things) technologies to transfer, store and display data in interactive dashboards and maps.
You will work in groups. 
We will have quizzes in between which you have to solve.
The final assignment will be a project documentation on a git server as well as a project presentation and a project video. 
I will also ask you to reflect on your own contribution and to give your own self-assessment.
The requirements are as always: Profound knowledge and skills, well-written and comprehensive project documentation as well as a working environmental monitoring system. 
You will produce a system including substantial documentation so that others

  • can follow your approach and redo the work,
  • understand the motivation of your development (Why do you design such a system?),
  • understand the physical principles of the environmental field of interest (What do you measure?),
  • understand the physical principles of the sensors (How does the sensor work?),
  • understand the technical principles of your system (What is the system architecture including data flow and data processing?),
  • see your system working and can access the data in real time online.

In WS2015/16 we start a novel progressive interdisciplinary course for environmental scientists and embedded systems developers called Environmental Monitoring with Embedded Systems.
This semester we merge the two modules "M-IE_CP.03 Real-Time Embedded Systems" and "M-IE_EA.02 Environmental Monitoring Research Project" to offer a forward-looking approach of significance: 
How can we support environmental sciences with cyber physical systems to observe, understand and protect environment and nature?

M-IE_CP.03 Real-Time Embedded Systems and
M-IE_EA.02 Environmental Monitoring Research Project
